Web design
When I opened the web page for this group of assignment, I was impressed. I think the group’s design of PLN is very simple and makes it easy for all visitors and readers to find out what they want to know. If the web page is not simplified, it is easy to have a sense of chaos. Therefore, when I see the web design of this group, I feel the coherence of the page and the content of each section can be well connected.
Content contribution
The first part introduces the definition of PLN, then introduces the link between COVID-19 and the Internet, which gives readers a direct link between the two. The relevant examples provided by Chloe is also pertinent to the topic and highlight the positive role PLN can play in COVID-19 at the outset. The second part explains the benefits of PLN in detail and plans two parts to help readers understand, respectively talking about the diversity and inclusiveness of PLN, and then pointing out the disadvantages of PLN. The advantage of this approach is that there are two sides to everything. Zhefu clearly took this into account and stressed the importance of media literacy. The last part elaborates on the importance of PLN to COVID-19 in combination with the previous two parts and calls it a new learning concept, which I agree with. At the same time, Ruobing does a good job of incorporating its own PLN case and not just talking about concepts.
Conclusion
Overall I really appreciate the work of this group, their web design and content contribution have many excellent PLN characteristics. I enjoyed it as a reader and learned something. Their references are also very relevant to their topic, and particularly relevant to this course. I think the one minor fly in the ointment is the lack of a summary. The function of the summary is to fill in the gaps, make their blog more complete, and also to reflect on the content again.
After listening to Mo Amir’s podcast, I think he is a person who uses Internet resources wisely. He always keeps his mind true to himself. He is independent in his thinking and is not overly influenced by the audiences. This is his personal characteristic, and the second is that he also builds connections with his peers and promotes his podcasts on the platform. He was very prescient, running a PLN is not easy, and how to create a successful PLN takes a lot of effort.
As a young person, I can feel directly how PLN helps me to develop quickly. The pictures and videos I take casually and put on the network, together with a few popular tags, and it can attract tens of thousands of people to browse. Even if it is not easy to get likes and comments, at least it gets seen. As a result, your work will make an impression on others, and frequent presence will help people deepen their impact. When your PLN gets noticed, your career opportunity will come. A good PLN can generate a lot of business value, especially if you are running something that you are interested in and want to keep growing. In addition to familiar social media, LinkedIn is also a great career development PLN for most people. Especially in the above can fully display their resume, be seen by more peers, and many companies or teams can dig talent.
I think PLN is definitely a useful tool and a good platform for future work selection and development of my interest areas. I can ask questions or offer help to others, and show my skills. But the most important thing is to keep it real as Mo Amir try to tell us, this is a must for PLN. If their PLN output false content, so soon will be found by others, not conducive to their credit establishment. Considering the epidemic situation, and I have great ideas about developing my career in PLN, I love using the Internet to show my value, which is relatively safe and stable. So I think this is a good choice for my career.

What is media literacy?
According to Trilling and Fadel’s article, “Media literacy in this context refers to the medium of delivering messages (print, graphics, animation, audio, video, Web sites, and so on), the crafting of the message for a particular medium”. In popular terms, it refers to a person’s attitude and ability to understand, judge and use the media. It also refers to people’s ability to choose, understand, question, evaluate, create, produce and respond critically when facing various media information. To put it simply, when we see a piece of news, we will consciously add our own opinions or criticisms, as well as our own doubts, which is the embodiment of our own media literacy.
Why is it important?
With the development of The Times, the connotation of media literacy is also extended, which includes people’s ability to make rational use of media to disseminate information for personal and social development. As the “natives” of the internet, we have grown up with the Internet. But to be a qualified netizen, we still need to keep learning and improving ourselves. First of all, we should try to be an wise person. After the rise of network media, information release has become no threshold, and dissemination is extremely fast. In many cases, “the truth is still putting on its shoes and the lies are all over town”.
Why is it dismissed?
“Sometimes we tend to be more interested in what we believe than what is true”(Smith, 2021). In today’s society, social media gives everyone the right to express themselves, but many people don’t take the responsibility to express themselves well. Sometimes, the public mood will be incited and guided by the unscrupulous media, people in the mass anger into the collective unconscious, lost rational thinking and judgment between the words, only blind emotional catharsis. It just shows that these people have not received a complete media literacy education and have not exercised their critical thinking. They just stick to their own ideas and have not learned to view media information in a fair way.
Why should you aim for varied views but the factual consensus in your PLN?
Modern network media will use big data to analyze users’ interests and push targeted information, so we are increasingly surrounded by all kinds of deliberately “feeding” information. This phenomenon can be described figuratively as an “information cocoon house” — people weave information based on their interests and end up weaving themselves into a “cocoon house”. Confined to the “information cocoon house” of biased thinking, how to make correct judgment and decision?
If we want to get out of this dilemma, we need to break through our prejudices and broaden our horizons to view the world and access information with a more open and inclusive mind. We should patiently listen to opinions and opinions that are different from our own, and try to understand some unfamiliar areas of knowledge. Life is not a single choice question, we can not limit ourselves in a well, a cocoon. Only by breaking out of the “information cocoon”, and the world will be more inclusive and diverse.

Explore the video provided and reflect on the themes of a PLN in a professional capacity.
After watching Brad Baker’s video, I quite agree with his positive views on PLN. First, he said PLN can contribute to the well-being of individuals and society, the second is not only allows one voice in PLN or anyone can have a consistent view. Because behind the platform, every speech has its own culture or background, it is these different, can promote an interesting PLN formation. Instead of agreeing with everyone at PLN, people can use their real ideas to create an open environment where everyone’s voice can be heard.
What social media platforms are beneficial in education?
English is not my first language, when I started to learn English, I found a website called TED. If one wants to practice listening and writing, then TED is excellent material. TED is about sharing ideas, making a clear argument, stating and proving it in a given amount of time. TED is a non-profit organization committed to “spreading all ideas worth spreading”. Every year, it invites elites in technology, education, design, psychology and other fields to give lectures and exchange ideas. Tens of millions of people around the world watch TED talks through the Internet and get inspired by their thinking here. I learned a lot from it, not only training my language ability.
In addition, I also enjoyed using WordPress to communicate with my classmates in EDCI338. Writing a blog is a good way to express my own ideas and attitudes. At the same time, I can read other students’ blogs and learn their opinions. This is a great platform for mutual growth.
Consider the equality that exists when all have the same platform to engage in community dialogues.
When we can use the same platform, it means we have the same chance to get information and leave our own comments on it. For many people who find it difficult to communicate face to face, the Internet can express themselves easily and freely. Everyone’s voice can be heard, and will not reject your voice because of your gender or race, which is a benefit that the Internet brings to everyone.

What are the benefits of a diverse and inclusive PLN in social media sharing that understands where you are coming from with messaging that impacts the community?
The diverse PLN has become such a part of our lives that, at this point, we can’t even imagine a world without different social media channels. Those PLN has provided us with many great opportunities. Platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, or Tiktok have given us opportunities to show ourselves, skills and areas of competence. In short, it is easier now to brand ourselves and promote what we do. If this opportunity is well used, we have more opportunities to be seen by future employers and promote what we create (e.g. art, writing, photography, music, etc.). At the same time, we can share our success stories or life stories and ask questions of people from all over the world. When we need help, we can use tag to spread and raise awareness. Especially in the last two years of the global pandemic, we are relying more on PLN to share content and solve problems, and people are discovering more possibilities for success.
As a young political activist, Markiel Simpson knew how to use the diverse PLN to create positive influence for his race and election. For example, he used the hashtag #StrongerTogether to make his tweets more likely to be found by people with similar experiences or interests. And I appreciate his service to his race. When he is a black candidate, it means he has a certain political influence, and he has always stayed true to his original aspiration to fight for more opportunities for his race and to eliminate racial discrimination in the world. At the same time, I can feel his positive and optimistic from his interview, and I can see that he has a lot of hopes for PLN. Because he can share his story at PLN, campaign for his election, and gain approval by spreading positive values. Finally, his words and experience can inspire or help others.

Identify the risks and benefits of engaging with a public audience in a media space – what are the risks for a public figure or person in a position of trust (educator, lawyer, government official)?
The vast majority of social platforms are unstepped barriers, meaning that anyone can enter, browse the platform and publish their own opinions. Public figures have more opportunities for people to see them. We can make connections through social software, and these connections should be positive. But for these influential public figures, discretion is what keeps them in the public eye. What else do people need to learn from their mistakes? So I think their risk is not to squander their “brand” at will. As Judy Vance put forward in the video interview that she is her own brand, which I really appreciate. A wrong statement or presentation by a public figure can destroy their “brand”.
How to best address negative replies and critiques reflective of your personal values and employer social media policy?
The first step in dealing with criticism is to determine the quality of criticism. If it is someone with an aggressive personality, their comments are obviously not constructive, and they don’t really hurt you. Don’t argue, just stay calm, ignore them and you will probably win the other person’s respect. For the constructive criticism, on the other hand, needs to be valued. Constructive criticism should be seen as a gift because it is a shortcut to growth. Try to step outside and think like a third party. Don’t get angry or start thinking negatively about yourself just because you’re being criticized. This will unnecessarily drain energy and affect your self-esteem level.
How do notable individuals use social media?
Notables can use social media to interact with fans to establish good connection and improve the stickiness of fans. Then fans can get to know notables in an all-round way. When notables face their supporters of all ages and classes, they should keep their positive attitude, convey effective messages and inspire supporters. Since they are no longer an ordinary individual user, they are seen and received a lot of love by many people, so they should be careful what they say and do.
What are the benefits of being in the public eye and having a PLN?
As an influential person, they are of certain commercial value. They have more opportunities for development than they are capable of. The audience’s trust can get them a lot of business support, not only to take the advertisement, they can be on the TV show and get a lot of job opportunities. A good PLN with impact means being able to touch better targets. That is a resume of their own, can be seen by many people.
Building community with online tools provided by the employer can be limiting, what are the perceived restrictions and benefits?
The biggest limitations are in privacy and interpersonal interactions. The online community provided by employers means losing some of their privacy and making people nervous when they enter the community is a complete work environment, so they may lose the good communication with their colleagues. Meanwhile, the benefits they have are that decisions and ideas within the company are kept in a safe place. Employers and employees can communicate directly with each other, and all the information can be integrated, improving their work efficiency.
Delivering information in a connected society requires verifiable resources, how to build a PLN to rely on?
Being authentic and giving people a direct view of your abilities and opinions helps build a high level of psychological friendship and consistency. Don’t post fake or exaggerated content, this way you don’t raise fans’ expectations too high, because high expectations often result in disappointment. In addition to showing off your ability to attract attention, sharing the same attitudes and values with your fans can help increase their affinity for you.
How do those, who are veteran storytellers, minimize risk in sharing misinformation?
Publishers need to know if there is uncertainty in the content/decision, and if they have the ability to make authoritative judgments about this uncertainty. They need objective evidence to support their content based on their experience and data analysis, so this part of the content should be true, falsification will bring indelible negative impact on them. The last thing you should do is proofread, which is a common practice for people who have the ability to speak, effectively avoiding most mistakes and increasing their chances of success.
How would you create a PLN prior to engaging a social media campaign on a topic of your choice? Choose a topic, consider your audiences, and consider how you would crate a social media campaign leveraging your PLN.
The first step in building an effective and spreading PLN is to determine your audience, and the purpose of doing so is to determine where your PLN platform needs to go.
First of all, I will choose the field that I am good at, or that I am interested in. Judging from the current global shopping trend, women have a strong purchasing power in beauty and clothing. As the main buyer in this area, I want to set up my PLN on Instagram, where I can share pictures, stories and videos. What I can confirm is that Instagram has made millions of people famous. Many people who share their travel photos or shopping summaries on instagram can get a lot of attention. If I want to make my PLN feel alive, I need to know what my strengths are. I love shopping for clothes and makeup, and even if I don’t share my shopping tips, they are part of my daily routine. This idea has been in my head for a long time. I can organize the products I buy into videos, along with my sense of use and ideas. Because I usually spend a lot of time in the exploration of niche and potential brands, I think most girls can not refuse these content. This is also the vlog favored by young people nowadays, not only because they like to buy, but also because it is a way to share their life. After the improvement of people’s living standards, the pursuit of quality of life also increases, people can see countless people’s way of life without going out, which is kind of attractive to many people.
When my PLN gets some attention, there will be many companies offering products for me to promote. This can be added to my income, which also reduces my searching time. Of course, it is my professional quality to screen excellent products for promotion, and not to bring false content to my audience can make my PLN operation more smooth. As for the promotion of my PLN, I think I can comment on my ideas under bloggers in the same field or hashtags, and I need to suggest a good relationship group. This helps the audience to see my content in relevant recommendations and show their presence in brand reviews. But I think the most important thing is to have your own personal characteristics and establish a bond between my audiences and me.
How diverse is your existing PLN?
In daily life, I spend a lot of time on various PLN. According to my life and study needs, my social media is clearly divided. Wechat is definitely the most popular social media I use. My family members and most of my friends use WeChat. I also like to share a lot of content about myself on wechat, because most of my members have real life connections with me. Instagram as an international social platform, I like to browse the life of people from different places from ins. Secondly, many of my classmates also use Instagram, so I would like to choose to use Instagram to establish contact with my classmates. Mattermost is the most commonly used platform of EDCI338, and I find it is a suitable place for classmates to get to know each other more quickly.
In your PLN, are you learning from a variety of voices or are you the loudest in the room?
In the past, I think I was more of a talker. I like to post my thoughts and comments on the Internet, but as I grow older I learn to reflect and speak carefully. So now I am definitely a listener. I learn and think from what others post, hoping to improve my own ideas and abilities.
Do you participate in a silo of information sharing (similar themes or wide range of interests)?
I participate in information sharing, especially on topics that interest me. For example, I share my new manicures and my recent photos I took, but only on my own page. I rarely comment on other people’s posts. I like reading the comments more than participating in these topics.
How can you use a diverse PLN to broaden your views of inclusion?
I think the diverse PLN let people more inclusive, because the network of immediacy, mass, global, interactive, let us a more quick and easy access to events. We could have many different point of view, no matter in the one side, tit-for-tat view collisions, these could perfect ourselves constantly critical reflection on the initial point of view, let myself can be more objective to the point of views, and look at the world more broadly and rationally.
In your professional setting of choice, do you think inclusion is actively embraced?
The professional setting I want to talk about is Economics. Firstly, I chose economics as my major in university, and I have known this field for more than two years. I think this major can adapt to any position, because we have a certain understanding of the economic operation of the world, and successful economic models can be applied to our development in various fields. Therefore, many people choose economics as their major, and I can tell this major is actively embraced.
What is the learning outcome of your PLN and how are you ensuring your exposure to diversity and inclusion?
I have a wide range of interests, and I like to learn and see different things on various platforms. For example, I was curious about the film cameras that were popular in the last century, and I would learn how to use film on YouTube, which I thought was a fun thing to do. After I was tired of using all kinds of digital tools to take memento, using a film camera became my new expectation. This is the diversity that I got in PLN, while also accommodating different people’s interests.
How has your thinking about inclusion and PLN evolved after reviewing the videos and readings?
After reviewing the videos and readings, I have a deeper understanding of diversity and inclusion. We present on the platform of everything from the thoughts and attitudes of our own, and everyone is a unique individual, so it is easy to understand why the Internet voice so complex, we should accept seeking common ground while putting aside differences. Don’t bash and boycott just because you don’t like it. Let everyone have their words.
